The Science Center

Website

Problem

This project was for science focused website and was part of an American Chemistry Council initiative for middle schoolers. Given the subject matter and the audience I decided to use large graphics that played to the science focus. A molecular graphic draws the eye to the site banner and the blocks pull the eye around the various sections.

Methods

Industry driven web sites have to maintain messaging regardless of user focus.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Pico, HTML, CSS, Javascript

Results

The site design appealed to the customer and did hit the tarket audience metrics.

PlasticsInfo.com

Website

Problem

This project was for the Plastics Council and was intended to highlight the uses of plastic in everyday lives. Colors, friendly imagry and soft corners were to be used to suggest that plastic products were unthreatening and useful.

Methods

As with the Science Center web site an industry driven web sites have to maintain messaging regardless of user focus.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, Javascript

Results

The site design appealed to the customer and did hit the tarket audience metrics.

InterImage

Website

Problem

InterImage is consulting company in Arlington, Virginia. I was given the assignment to modernize their public facing corporate site. I aproached the site with a moderist flare and used the minimal graphcs to highlight the textual descriptions of the important work the company was being contracted to do.

Methods

Corporate web sites generally have an additional problem of identifying and speaking to relevant stakeholders. As per discussions with the team the audiences the site was to target were identified: Potential Customers, Existing Customers, Employees, and General Public. With this in mind we developed personas to determine how each group would react to the site and sections that were felt to need more development.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, Javascript

Results

This was one of several mock-ups for this project and while the decision and layout changed the methods used remained essentially the same.

Take Charge

Website

Problem

Take Charge was a initative developed by the Epilepsy Foundation to talk to highschool aged teens about Epilepsy. The graphics and colors are meant to draw in students who are used to design with a large amount of visual flare.

Methods

This project was one of a number of initiatives from the Epilepsy Foundation meant to appeal to a specifc audience. In this case older teens. The we encountered problem is that the message is often missed because the desired group isn't actually being spoken to, but given platitudes that say what say what it's thought teens like to hear and see. In the development of personas, members of the target audience to determine how to approach their group as an audience. We decided that meaningful conversations with short phrases, relevant fashionable colors and imagry were able to draw the intended audience into the conversation.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, Javascript

Results

This site was a first step towrds a more fully realized teen outreach program for Foundation. The success of the methodology was roundly praised and used in other outreach programs.

Ken Shamrock Website

Website

Problem

This is project that came to me because of the work I'd done with PI Studios. The goal of the project was to redesign the Ken Shamrock Offical Website for a modern audience. The design was drawn from a sleek and industrial sensibility and included many modern enhancements such as video and other interactive elements.

Methods

For this piece consideration was given to the fact that Ken Shamrock has very self driven audience and will look for media concerning him on the web. The goal of this site was to be a focus point for all things Ken Shamrock and to engage the user right off the bat without requiring that they dig deep for what they want.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Dreamweaver, HTML, CSS, Javascript

Results

Undertstanding the audience was key tho this site and we found that the more we keyed into their sensibilites the more engagement we got.

RMDA Reading Room

Website

Problem

The Electronic Reading Room is part of the US Defense Department's Freedom of Information program. Strong visual imagry highlights the mission without needing to resport to overused patriotic types of images. The textual preamble highlights the mission and leads into the main function of the web site.

Methods

Large Conservative organizations often develop their own language to approach a problem. The problem that presents itself is to get the language to soften when speaking to users outside the larger group. A strong visual language and selective text was chosen to facilitate this approach.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Visual Studio, HTML, CSS, Javascript, C#

Results

The site design appealed to the customer and did hit the tarket audience metrics.

Epilepsy Foundation Poster

Poster

Problem

This poster was given to attendees of the first annual Epilepsy Foundation Walk. With this project I choose to highlight the people of the walk with a photograph of the attendees during the walk; together with the text the importance of the event was brought to the fore.

Methods

In order to make participants feel appreciated for their contribution in the Epilepsy Walk it was decided that a commerative poster would help towards that. The text and imagry are used in concert to project the message of unity and appreciation.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop

Results

We did indeed make something special for the walk participants and we received many letters and notes saying just how much they appreciated the poster.

State Department Poster

Poster

Problem

Every year the Security Technology branch of the State Department holds a meeting to highlight the challenges that Security Offices face in the field. The year this poster was made was a particularly challenging one for the State Department and I choose imagry that was dynamic and forward moving to visually describe our mood and attitude during difficult times.

Methods

This event was very important to our group and the design of the poster was meant as a bellweater to the event. In conversations with the customer I noted that he used several road metaphors to describe the event e.g. the road ahead and it's been a difficult. When it came time to chose the imagry I specifically began looking for images that were of roads and road related items.

Tools

Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator

Results

The poster was very successful and related the intended message to attendees.
